Security risks in sensors of implanted medical devices

The type of sensors that pick up the rhythm of a beating heart in implanted cardiac defibrillators and pacemakers are vulnerable to tampering, according to a new study involving University of Michigan researchers and others in an international team.

In experiments in simulated human cadavers, the researchers demonstrated that they could forge an erratic heartbeat with radio frequency electromagnetic waves. Theoretically, a false signal like the one they created could inhibit needed pacing or induce unnecessary defibrillation shocks.

The researchers emphasise that they know of no case where a hacker has corrupted an implanted cardiac device, and doing so in the real world would be extremely difficult. They stress that people with pacemakers and defibrillators can remain confident in the safety and effectiveness of their implants.

The work and research being carried out at the University of Michigan College of Engineering hope to make embedded computer systems smarter with better security and safety, reduced energy consumption, and faster performance.

G-Form case protects iPad after 60 foot drop onto concrete

G-Form puts its new Extreme Portfolio Case to an extreme test, watch an iPad being dropped in a G-Form Extreme Portfolio case from 60 foot and compare it to what happens to an iPad in a side-by-side test of a competitor's well known hard shell case.

The G-form athletic and consumer electronic extreme products utilize Reactive Protection Technology (RPT), a composite blend of PORON XRD that instantly stiffens upon impact and absorbs over 90 percent of impact kinetic energy, returning to its soft flexible form when the impact has dissipated.

This state-of-the-art impact protection is lightweight, flexible, low profile and machine washable.

Taking injection moulding to the next level

Pär Andersson, a Tetra Pak Specialist in Plastic Injection Moulding, explains how the development of the world's fastest injection moulding machine was instrumental in the launch of the world's first aseptic carton bottle for ambient distribution.

To create a package with the opening and pouring functionality of a bottle while maintaining the environmental and operational efficiency of a carton package, Tetra Pak needed to develop a plastic top which could fuse the bottle opening to a cardboard sleeve whilst ensuring that the liquid was kept safe and secure.

Injection moulding is one of the most common manufacturing processes in the world, used in manufacturing products such as mobile devices, computers, sports equipment and DVDs. In the simplest terms, materials are injected into a mould to produce parts of a product.

World's first 3D printed snowboard

Snowboards have traditionally been made of wood, resin, laminates, and P-Tex—until now!

The Signal Snowboard's factory crew, led by Founder Dave Lee give the board presses a rest this month and instead print out a brand new snowboard! Partnering with eco-friendly 3D printing company GROWit, based in Lake Forest, CA, the printed board was constructed on GROWit's custom-built plastic laser sintering machine in carbonGRO 640.

“More industries are testing the limits of laser sintered parts for functioning applications that go beyond prototyping and development”, said GROWit Founder/CEO, David Gurrola. “CarbonGRO 640 seemed the best fit for this project, and everyone was really pleased at how well the snowboard performed.”

CarbonGRO 640 is one of the best materials available today for lightweight, stable materials that can withstand extreme temperatures.

	BigDog handles heavy objects.

The goal is to use the strength of the legs and torso to help power motions of the arm.

This sort of dynamic, whole-body approach to manipulation is used routinely by human athletes and will enhance the performance of advanced robots. Boston Dynamics is developing the control and actuation techniques needed for dynamic manipulation.

Reducing robot downtime with Triflex RS

Compatible with more than 100 robot models and brands, the igus Triflex RS system is even more versatile and user-friendly. The internal retraction force prevents loops forming in the working area of the robot and keeps the energy chain close to the robot's arm for smooth running.

The approved EASY-style allows easy cable access and visibility at all times, ensuring easy maintenance, and the Triflex RS module is now also able to handle even higher forces, including a 50 percent higher linear pull force.

You can read about how Jaguar Land Rover reduced the downtime on one of its factory robot by 66 percent thanks to the Triflex RS here

A new film has been launched by the <a href="http://apprenticeships.org.uk.
