Improving mobility, connectivity and productivity - Top Ten

To read the latest issue of Manufacturing Digital, click here

	10. Open Source

Put simply, open source is a culture promoting and distributing universal access to a product’s design or template. Commonly in the form of software code; it allows anyone to take it, improve it and personalise it. An innovative success borne out of the movement is the Raspberry Pi, an inexpensive credit-card sized PC designed to get children, among others, engaged with computer programming through the use of open source software.

	9. Social Media

Though some would argue manufacturers have arrived slightly late to the social media buffet, an increasing number of companies are joining networks such as Facebook, Google+ and the recently launched Businessfriend, keen to take advantage of the business-to-business, business-to-consumer and organisational connectivity they provide.

	8. Unified Communications

The process of integrating real-time instant messages, standard and IP telephony, video conferencing and data sharing with non-real time communications such as voicemail, e-mail, fax and text messages, unified communications allows access to a variety of sources through different mediums, i.e. emails via a smartphone, enabling seamless connectivity and the optimisation of business processes.

	7. Big Data Analytics

As a greater amount of business functions become digitised, the amount of data being gathered is rising exponentially. The difficulty lies in not only storing and sharing this data, but its effective analysis to swiftly gather meaningful insights, track patterns and anticipate trends, leading to a rise in related investment, data management companies and services such as the popular Google Analytics.

	6. ERP

Integrating every facet of an organisation’s activity, from accounting and sales, to production and distribution, Enterprise Resource Planning automates the various processes through an integrated software application. With many now considering the backbone of a company to be ERP, the cloud is allowing even greater visibility, connectivity, control and customisation for the next generation.

	5. Industrial Intelligence

By converging and sharing the data generated by traditional manufacturing systems, such as Product Lifecycle Management and RFID across the different stages of a company, Industrial Intelligence is helping to further connectivity and responsiveness. Extending beyond plant floor systems to connect designers through to supply partners and even customers, a beneficial, accessible ecosystem is created for all.

	4. BYOD

With ever-increasing and more powerful smartphones, tablets and laptops, the less time managers, supervisors, engineers and technicians have to spend in offices tied to desktop computers. The technology in our hands now allow us to monitor and access information and data from any location, at any time; giving rise to the escalating Bring-Your-Own-Device trend currently booming.

	3. Cloud

Thanks to virtualisation –removing the need for a physical infrastructure – having applications hosted in the cloud and varying accessible by all, speeds up decision-making, raises efficiency, increases productivity and reduces costs. Supporting unified communications, Industrial Intelligence, ERP and big data analytics, among others, and buoyed by BYOD, the cloud is playing a crucial role in both mobility and connectivity.

	2. 3D Printing

Though not a new idea, recent years have seen the cost of 3D printing fall as much as its applications have increased. Quickly and accurately adding successive layers of material to build a shape, 3D printing has the potential to radically transform the way manufacturers interact with consumers and suppliers across all sectors, through rapid prototyping, rapid manufacturing and mass personalisation.

	1. Internet of Things

The basic idea lies in equipping objects with minute identifying devices and internet connectivity, allowing various objects to communicate with each other. Sometimes referred to as the Internet of Everything, it has the potential to transform not only the world of manufacturing, but the whole world around us.

Already paying dividends thanks to RFID and smart sensors, things such as vending machines, printers, fridges, stock rooms and production lines aren’t running out of supplies thanks to the things themselves making the relevant people aware when inventory runs low.

And this is just the beginning. Similar devices are being placed in homes, offices, vehicles, livestock and even people, allowing physicians to monitor health issues and remotely perform check-ups.

As an increasing number of things have the ability to communicate with each other, and utilising many of the innovations discussed through numbers 10 to two, there’s no limit to the possibilities of what can be achieved.

Often referred to as simply CAT, the instantly recognisable yellow colour scheme means it doesn’t take long to spot one of the company’s tractors, excavators, trucks, loaders or forklifts. Since 1925 the company has steadily diversified its product, services and technologies to encompass construction and agricultural machinery, power systems, engines and financial products.

	8. Lockheed Martin: Aerospace/Defence – US$46.49 billion

The American automotive stalwart, as intertwined with Detroit as the city is to it, manufacture cars and trucks in almost 40 countries through brands including Buick, Cadillac Chevrolet, GMC and Vauxhall. The first contemporary company to release an all-electric automobile back in 1990, GM’s current hybrid vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt, has won numerous international Green Car awards.

	3. Apple Inc: Consumer Electronics – US$156.51 billion

Though its reputation took a knock over the labour practices of some of its suppliers, Apple’s legions of fans, both new and old didn’t seem to be deterred. The company is consistently regarded as one of the world’s most powerful brands, and is second only to Samsung as the world’s largest information technology company.

	2. Samsung Group: Consumer Electronics – US$220.1 billion

One of the largest conglomerates in the world, Toyota’s reach goes far beyond automobiles, with the Japanese company heavily involved in aerospace, agricultural biotechnology, higher education, philanthropy and robotics.

Innovation is crucial to Toyota’s vision for the future, with the company aiming to continually reinvent itself and stay ahead in an increasingly more competitive market. The same is true for investing in the future of mobility, as it looks to develop new forms of transportation and pursue new ways to connect technology with people.

To read the latest issue of Manufacturing Digital, click here

GXS’ experts in cloud computing, manufacturing, retail, e-invoicing and more, share their thoughts on the major trends for the coming year. Based on research, news, trends and customer discussions, the predictions span different industry verticals, geographic regions and technology sectors.

	10. Continued threat of distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks will drive bank to migrate corporate client to host-to-host channel – financial institutions will push commercial clients to migrate to host-to-host transmission models. These more secure file-based channels have a lower risk of disruption from DDOS attacks

	9. Competition in emerging markets will drive significant growth in managed file transfer for manufacturers – manufacturers will decentralise product design functions to fast-growing markets closer to end-customers, like China and Brazil. This change will drive the need for better Managed File Transfer of CAD/CAM diagrams.

	8. 2013 will be the watershed year for e-invoicing –the potential benefits of e-invoicing have been recognised for many years. But, 2013 will finally witness a critical mass of adoption due to enforcement of government mandates and the desire to accelerate payment terms

	7. US business will expand use of EDI documents in the supply chain –with the debt ceiling issues temporarily behind us, the US economy will see an uptick in customer demand and manufacturing output. To keep pace with the changes, companies will invest in supply chain automation technologies including ASNs, PO changes and other EDI transactions

	6. 2013’s supplier of the year: The Crowd –as crowd-sourcing moves from a risky experiment to a mainstream approach to business, it will create a need to do business electronically and a new challenge for the B2B market

	5. Re-shoring will lead to an increase in B2B integration –rising labour costs, supply chain risk and logistical challenges will cause manufacturers to re-shore some of their activities to Western locations. To remain cost-competitive, manufacturers will need to further invest in connectivity and integration with their business partners

	4. Online marketplaces will shape the collaboration agenda in retail –with the recent omni-channel commerce surge; brands now have a better understanding of the product data consumers need to make informed online purchases. In 2013, brand owners will start to more aggressively share item attribute information with online marketplaces and e-tailers

	3. Social B2B graphs will embrace capabilities from their consumer-oriented counterparts and add role-driven, dynamic ‘circles’ – social graphs for businesses will gain importance as B2B networks begin to map the relationship between customers and suppliers. B2B networks will also begin to create ‘circles’ to better manage the different types of partners

	2. Big data and B2B integration cloud platforms will enable predictive analytics to improve supply chain performance –companies will combine the unstructured buying behaviour information data from omni-channel commerce with the supply chain data to create a holistic approach to predictive supply chain analytics and a better understanding of how to achieve their desired outcomes

	1. Supply chain network providers will simplify master data management for all of us, finally –now that supply chain network providers have reached massive scale, in 2013 businesses will create generic and portable profiles of the information they share among trading partners

Global Green Companies - Top Ten

	Follow @Jonny_Editor_MD

	10. BMW

	www.bmw.com

Having already won Green-Car-Guide.com Greenest Manufacturer of the Year back in April, the German auto-company has truly embraced sustainability throughout its operations; removing waste and introducing alternative energy to its production plants, committing to greater fuel efficiency goals for its engines and launching an eco ‘i’ range with two electric hybrids scheduled for next year.

	9. Danone

	www.danone.com

The French company behind famous brands such as Evian, Actimel and Activia has finally broken into the top ten this year thanks to a continued effort to become more sustainable. Its dual focus on economic and social value has seen Danone, for example, reduce overall packaging and raise its use of recyclable materials, regularly being ranked among the best local employers and invest in rural communities.

	8. Siemens

	www.siemens.com

In the years since Siemens began to embrace green technology, the company has earned an impressive collection of sustainability awards and accolades. Though negative past stories and publicity have come back to haunt the German conglomerate recently, (attributed to it dropping five places from last year), Siemens is working hard to rectify the problems highlighted and improve its ranking for 2013.

	7. Dell

	www.dell.com

Though it may not be perfect, this computer technology company has a raft of sustainable initiatives implemented throughout its operations, ranging from replacing existing packaging materials with bio-degradable alternatives and offering more energy efficient laptops and desktops, to setting up Dell Reconnect points to simplify the recycling of its equipment and establishing an ‘Air to Sea’ logistics initiative.

	6. Panasonic

	www.panasonic.net

Managing to raise its position the highest amount out of the whole top ten, last year’s number 10 has aspirations to become the ‘Number 1 Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry’. Though they may not be alone in chasing the title, Panasonic has given itself a solid foundation for future sustainability managing to accrue an impressive amount of eco-awards and achievements in recent years.

	5. HP

	www.hp.com

One of the world’s largest technology companies is also one of the greenest, becoming a champion for reducing industries consumption of energy, utilities, paper, waste and CO2. Committed to not only becoming more sustainable itself, but to its customers as well, HP operates a long-standing recycling program and offer ever-more efficient products initiative.

	4. VW

	www.volkswagen.com

Dedicated to producing vehicles which are ever-more fuel efficient and cleaner for the environment, the German manufacturer backs up what could be just empty claims with substantial investments and real innovation. To date, Volkswagen already has a varied range of hybrid and electric vehicles, more sustainable production processes, moved into renewable energy and launched the ‘Think Blue’ innovation philosophy in the US.

	3. Honda

	www.world.honda.com

In a top ten dominated by automotive manufacturers embracing alternatively-fuelled vehicles, Honda was the first to offer a mass-production hybrid model for the US and Europe, back in 1999, and hasn’t looked back since. To coincide with continuous improvement throughout its own organisation, the launch of the ‘Fit EV’ next year could finally prove to be the tipping point for electric vehicles, making them more accepted by the mainstream and commercially viable as a result.

	2. Johnson & Johnson

	www.jnj.com

With over two decade’s experience of implementing environmental initiatives, Johnson & Johnson constantly strives to make its organisation more socially sustainable and responsible. The company estimates its many varied products are used by almost one billion people every year and has put a greater emphasis on producing greener products with extended lives, earning it the status of ‘Champion of Change’ at this year’s CleanMed conference.

	1. Toyota

	www.toyota-global.com

Last year’s number one retains not only the Interbrand top spot, but a host of similar lists from across the globe. Pioneering the lean philosophy during the 1990s, the entire Toyota ethos revolves around innovation, efficiency, streamlining processes, the removal of waste and a dedication to sustainable practices. With a brand that has become synonymous with hybrid vehicles, due to the huge success of the Toyota Prius, Toyota has plans to offer its entire range with a Hybrid Synergy Drive option within the next 20 years. The auto-manufacturer has become a world leader in environmentally friendly vehicle technologies and continues to make significant investments in research & development, and pioneer the very latest eco-technologies. One of the world’s largest and most successful companies, Toyota stands as a stark example to those who think that true innovation and organisational consistency can only be achieved by smaller, less diversified businesses.

Reasons why training fails - Top Ten

Written by Gary Wyles, Managing Director – Festo Training & Consulting

	10. Selecting the wrong people

Companies don’t always include the right people on the training. There needs to be a clear understanding of who the training will really impact, who will apply the changes and who will support the training back at base.

	9. A quick fix

Companies don’t recognise training as a continuous process. This can lead to looking for a quick fix where the training provider is not well aligned to the requirements of the business. They need to know what will work for the client and be happy to change and/or modify their training accordingly.

	8. No expertise

Training is often created by the wrong people, whether this is internal experts with no training experience, or equally external consultants with no real-world experience. If you are looking for impact, select a supplier who knows and understands your business, rather than an off-the-shelf solution.

	7. No sense of direction

Companies don’t identify where they want to be, only that they know they want to be somewhere else than where they are currently. Far better to know where you’re going and what is required to get you there.

	6. No idea what it is about

Any person sent on training will wonder why they have been selected and what an earth it is all about. Companies need to share their vision of their business goals, alight their people and clearly signpost their part in the future success of the organisation. Otherwise, participants arrive unprepared and with no personal connection or need defined.

	5. What, a whole day out?

If people don’t understand the need, it is likely they will partake reluctantly, sitting with their arms crossed and itching to bring out their smartphones/tablets. With pressures of workloads, participants can see training as an inconvenience, rather than an opportunity.

	4. No follow-up

Training doesn’t stop at the classroom door- if it does it is hugely expensive day out! If there is too much focus on the course and not on the application of knowledge and how it will be applied in the real world, it won’t deliver in the medium or long-term.

	3. It’s a box tick

Yes, we all know that we have personal and business objectives to meet, but if managers approach training as a box ticking exercise, then it’s doomed from the start.

	2. A revenue mindset

Of course, it’s not all down to the client. Trainers are equally to blame. They often focus more on the revenue they create for themselves than the value they create for their clients. This is no win situation for all parties.

	1. Treating the symptom not the cause

There’s a wonderful quote from Albert Einstein saying the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You would have thought that by now companies and suppliers could create training that really impacts on the future growth and success of the company. The first key cause of failure is that companies try to treat the symptoms rather than the cause of the issue. They are then left wondering why the same issues keep coming back to haunt them.

Aside from working with some of most innovative and technically-gifted people in the world, the other reason people are drawn to Microsoft is the well-publicised benefits offered. Healthcare, gym memberships, paid-time off for new parents, child-care services, company stock discounts, charity donations, pension plan and training programmes only scratch the surface.

	www.gore.com

Last year marked the fourteenth consecutive year WL Gore has appeared on Fortune’s ‘100 best companies to work for’ list, an achievement only a small handful have managed to achieve. Preferring a more team-based business structure, Gore has pioneered a ‘Work-Life-Balance’ culture to establish a balanced relationship between employees’ personal needs and work commitments. Worker autonomy is also prevalent, with a focus on independence, flexibility and personal responsibility. All employees are accountable for their own skills and knowledge development, a unique strategy which has fostered a deep-sense of employee satisfaction and pride. Alongside more standard benefits, Gore is dedicated to the physical and spiritual well-being of its employees, providing the necessary facilities and activities to ensure workers are as stimulated on the inside as they are on the outside. It probably isn’t just a coincidence that the company often cited as the best example of an employer truly caring and supporting its employees as individuals is the smallest company on this list, in many cases by a huge margin.

Though 3D may not be a new concept, LG’s latest range try and do something different. For avid video gamers the ‘Dual Play’ feature could finally put end to the ‘stop looking at my screen’ argument, while non-gamers can enjoy the ‘Magic Remote’, LED Plus technology, enhanced Smart TV functionality and experience LG’s award-winning, Full HD Cinema 3D.

Marginally beating OrbitSound’s T12 V3, Yamaha’s latest Soundbar proves you really do get what you pay for. Eliminating the need and clutter of having a number speakers with trailing wires, the YSP-2200 offers an immersive surround sound from a single speaker bar, with 7.1 sound, Cinema DSP, Music Enhancer and Intellibeam automatic calibration features as standard.

Similar to the Apple TV in dimension, there are two Android media players for users to choose between, the Nano offers Ethernet connectivity as well as Wi-Fi, whereas the Slim offers just Wi-Fi. The Cyclone allows access to the Google Play Store for the latest games and apps, as well as being able to stream Full HD from the web, via the likes of YouTube and Netflix.

Rapper and producer Curtis Jackson (AKA 50 Cent) appeared in person to show off his stylish range of headphones. The wireless SYNC by 50, the range’s top model, uses a transmitter rather than Bluetooth technology offering a far richer audio experience.

Considered to be a serious contender to Apple’s Macbook Air, both in design and function, Dell’s latest Ultrabook packs an edge-to-edge 13.3” WLED screen, backlit keyboard, 128 or 256GB Hard Drive, an Intel Dual Core i5 or i7 processor, Windows 7 OS, a webcam and a host of other stylish features.

 1. Aurasma

	$FREE

	www.aurasma.com

Though technically not a gadget in itself, there was one thing GSL 2012 left attendees talking about, Aurasma’s AR (Augmented Reality) technology which truly offered a glimpse into the world’s technological future. Aurasma is a free app compatible with both Android and Apple iOS smartphones and devices. The app combines information from the real world with augmented reality content, making fully interactive ‘auras’ which can be easily shared and viewed. Though aimed at both consumers and businesses, it’s the marketing possibilities Aurasma offers that have got so many people excited. M&S, Panasonic, Reebok, O2 and Budweiser are just some of the brands embracing these advertising opportunities. Budweiser’s beer mat campaign, to coincide with this summer’s FA Cup, allows users to aim their smartphones at a campaign beer mat and a virtual 3D version of the FA Cup will appear on-screen, putting the cup literally in the hands of the fans.

Eco-friendly cars at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show - Top Ten

	Written by Jonny Williamson

	10. Renault ZOE EV (USD$28,500)

Part of Renault’s commitment to electric vehicles, the ZOE EV packs a 65kW electric motor capable of 208km on a full charge. Smaller and lighter than its production contemporaries, the attractive car has its battery under the floor rather than under the bonnet, lowering the centre of gravity and translating to superior handling.

	www.renault-ze.com

	9. Ford Focus Electric (USD$39,000)

Ford’s first foray into EV’s, the Focus Electric is powered by a 100kW electric motor and a 23kW lithium-ion battery pack giving a top speed of 135kph. The car comes equipped with many hi-tech features including remote charging, electrical data display, charge station locations and range margin, all accessed through a specialised version of Ford’s MyFord Touch driver system.

	www.ford.com/electric/focuselectric/2012

	8. Toyota FT-Bh (Concept)

What is truly impressive about the FT-Bh is the marked reduction in weight compared to previous models; it’s allegedly 25 percent lighter than the current Yaris. With a futuristic, minimalist design the emphasis is clearly on aerodynamics, hence the use of lighter interior and trim materials, as well as cameras replacing the wing mirrors and a lack of door handles.

	www.toyota.com/concept-vehicles

	7. Morgan Plus E (Concept)

Based heavily on the Plus 8, the Plus E looks virtually identical, apart from the main difference of running on a Zytek electric motor and lithium-ion battery rather than petrol. It’s refreshing to see an almost retro design from the British car manufacturers opposed to the more futuristic models exhibited at this year’s show.

	www.morgan-motor.co.uk/mmc/carrange/pluse/plusemorgan.html

	6. Tata Mega Pixel (Concept)

An electric car which uses a petrol engine to boast its range, much like the Chevrolet Volt and the Vauxhall Ampera, the Mega Pixel is the latest from one of the most commonly seen automakers in Asia and parts of Europe. With a reputation for being innovative and daring to be different, you only have to look at the sliding doors to understand why.

	www.tatamotors.com

	5. Hyundai i-oniq (Concept)

An electric sports hatchback with a range-extending petrol engine, the i-oniq showcases Hyundai’s commitment to both sleek athleticism and clean technology. The dynamic proportions and body lines certainly garnered attention, and though not in production at the moment, the concept could certainly influence the design of Hyundai’s future hybrids.

	www.hyundaiusa.com

	4. Honda EV-STER ($45,000-$55,000)

The electric, two-seater, convertible sports car utilizes carbon materials to reduce the overall weight, contributing to the EV-STER’s high performance and approximate range of 160km. What really makes the EV-STER stand out however is the choice to replace the traditional steering wheel with a twin-lever, offering the driver an experience more commonly associated with a motorbike.

	world.honda.com/automobile/index.html

	3. Italdesign-Giugiaro Brivido (Concept)

Built to commemorate Giugiaro’s forty-second appearance at Geneva, the hybrid four-seater prototype features an impressive exterior, combining carbon fibre, aluminium and glass. With an emphasis on integrated-technology the interior dashboard has a symmetrical design with LED displays for both driver and passenger, situated above the steering wheel and iPad dock respectively.

	www.italdesign.it/home

	2. Pininfarina Cambiano (Concept)

The Cambiano is an electric luxury car with an emphasis very much on the luxury. With simple flowing lines, the car looks impressive with a single sports coupe door on the driver side in contrast to the two doors on the other, the back being rear-hinged. An electric motor for each wheel provides 60kW’s of power and the car has a range of 125km.

	www.pininfarina.com/index/contatti

	1. Infinity Emerg-E (Concept)

Nissan’s upmarket brand Infinity have successfully put themselves front and centre with what many consider to be the star of this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The plug-in hybrid supercar’s exquisite bodywork is made from carbon fibre, with a multitude of graceful lines and curves, all atop an adapted aluminium chassis from the Lotus Evora. Weighing only 1,600kg, the mid-engine hybrid produces 400bhp of electric power with the combined capabilities producing an extended-range beyond 400km. Infiniti claim the Emerg-E accelerates from 0-90km in four seconds with a top speed in excess of 200kph, reached in around 30 seconds. Though only a concept, Infiniti themselves prefer to call it a ‘prototype’ and have stated that a lot of future design ideas and innovations have been trailed in the Emerg-E and if successful could very well lead them to push the model into production as soon as 2016. a

Accidents and Unintended Uses - Top 10

	Written by Jonny Williamson

	10. Play-Doh

Originally invented as wallpaper cleaner during the 1930s, the brand remarketed itself when school children were found to be using the pliable compound as a substitute for modelling clay in the mid-1950s. Nowadays Play-Doh produces almost 100 million cans a year and is sold in over 70 countries across the globe.

	9. WD-40

Created over half a century ago as a way of repelling water and preventing corrosion, it became apparent that ‘Water Displacement-40th Attempt’ had far more industrial and domestic uses. More than 150 countries now use the spray as a means of lubrication, loosening joints, hinges, bolts and screws, as well as removing dirt and grime.

	8. Cyanoacrylate Adhesives

Cyanoacrylates were developed during experiments to produce a transparent plastic specifically for use in gun sights, but were found to be unsuitable. Able to join many materials together quickly and with tremendous strength, they were marketed as a new form of adhesive, later becoming more commonly known as ‘super glue’.

	7. Paintball

Pistols designed as a way for forestry personnel and rangers to quickly mark trees and cattle have evolved into what into what has become the popular sport of paintball. Leagues and national tournaments have helped drive the sport’s acceptance, proving popular for both corporate team-building and more personal events such as birthdays and stag-do’s.

	6. Blu-Tack

A researcher working for a sealant manufacturer inadvertently created the re-usable putty that struggled to find a market for many years. Over time, however the semi-elastic adhesive has hung many a poster on walls and doors around the world, as well as being the ideal material for sculpting and stop-motion animation.

	5. Teflon

Invented by accident, early uses for the polymer included coating the seals and valves of high pressure pipes containing volatile gases. Yet it was the combination of high heat-resistance and melting temperature, along with low friction properties, that made it an ideal coating for pans and other cookware, eventually taking Teflon global.

	4. Gorilla Glass

A shelved product from a 1960s glass-strengthening programme, the toughened glass has recently been rediscovered for use in consumer electronics. The scratch-resistance, thinned glass now makes the touch screens for many HTC, Nokia and Samsung smartphones, in addition to tablets such as the Blackberry Playbook, Dell Streak and Motorola Xoom.

	3. Kleenex

The facial tissues started out marketed as a disposable towel for taking off cold cream and make-up remover, a disposable alternative to face towels. Following research that some consumers were using the tissues as a handkerchief, the company shifted the advertising focus to reflect this and the global brand was born.

	2. Eiffel Tower

Intended to stand for only 20 years, the Tower was erected as an entrance to the 1889 World Fair; marking the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Demolition was postponed thanks to its use as radio tower and since its erection almost 250 million people have visited the site, making it the most visited paid-for monument in the world.

	1. SMS Text Messages

It is funny to think that a service originally used by telecomm companies to let customers know about problems with their network or inform them of voice mail messages has led to a revolution in the way society communicates. The Short Message Service ability of a mobile phone was originally limited to only 160 characters, necessitating a new form of abbreviations and slang terms known as ‘text-speak’. The text messages proved so popular, so quickly that networks didn’t have adequate systems in place to charge customers for the service. With over 5 trillion text messages now sent annually, traditional SMS messages are becoming increasingly challenged by cheaper alternative messaging services. However it was SMS that paved the way from simple text to now being able to send group messages and multimedia content such as full-colour images and video clips.

Modern Day Inventions - Top Ten

	Written by Christopher Davies

	10. Satellite Navigation (GPS)

Commercially available satellite navigation systems have enabled users to quickly and accurately travel between locations, leaving atlases and maps obsolete to the digital generation. Even though the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS) has been operational for over 30 years, the 21st century has ushered in a wave of cheap, affordable and portable 'Sat-Navs'.

	9. Nintendo Wii

While video games consoles have been existence for several decades, the Nintendo Wii has introduced and showcased a new form of interactive entertainment. Released in 2006, the Wii uses a handheld remote to detect movement in three dimensions. In just over five years, 90 million consoles have been sold worldwide.

	8. USB Flash Drive

Succeeding the humble floppy disk, which had a mere 1.44 MB of storage capacity, the USB flash drive has transformed the way we store and share information. Trek Technology and IBM began commercially selling these devices in 2000 and since then, USB flash drives have become an essential computing peripheral.

	7. Microsoft Windows XP

Released in 2001, Microsoft's Windows XP operating system went on to dominate the personal computer market and still accounts for a significant market share. In January 2007, 76.1 percent of internet visitors were using Windows XP, whereas today it commands 38.5 percent of the market. Not bad for an operating system which is approaching its tenth birthday.

	6. E-book reader

Sony were one of the first to market an e-book reader with its Data Discman in 1992, however in recent years the market has exploded with more portable devices available and a wider range of content being published. Amazon's Kindle is currently the market leader, with its first device released in 2007 selling out in five and a half hours.

	5. 3D printer

The concept of 3D printing can trace its roots back to 1984, however it has only been during the past 15 years that rapid prototyping has grown in significance. Today several industries, particularly manufacturing, are taking advantage of creating small-scale models or prototypes before they go into full scale production.

	4. Smartphones

The speed in which mobile phone technology has advanced over the past 10 years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Smartphones now dominate the landscape with impressive specifications and expansive touchscreens featuring a cavalcade of applications capable of playing music, taking photos and perhaps most importantly, communicating with one another.

	3. 'Green' transport

Believe it or not, hydrogen and electric vehicles have been around for nearly 200 years. However with the world now heavily dependent on increasingly costly and environmentally damaging gasoline-fuelled vehicles, sustainable alternatives have risen in prominence. Nissan's electric Leaf, Honda's hydrogen FCX Clarity and Toyota's hybrid Prius are notable examples.

	2. AbioCor artificial heart

The world's first artificial, internal, self-contained replacement organ is able to full sustain the body's circulatory system and is intended for end-stage heart failure patients. The AbioCor features an internal rechargeable battery which is continually recharged from an external power source via an energy transfer device called TET (transcutaneous energy transmission).

	1. iPod and iTunes

When Apple introduced the iPod in 2001, it was greeted with a mixed reaction from analysts, critics and above all consumers. Apple had yet to penetrate the consumer electronics market, which typically has lower profit margins than personal computers, and with a price-tag of $399 in a saturated market, nobody could have predicted the success that followed for the next 10 years. Its clean and crisp design was a growing Apple trademark, as was the simple functionality and ease of use. Combined with digital audio software iTunes, from which users could burn CDs, sync their iPods and eventually purchase MP3 files, Apple would go on to change the music industry forever. Apple have sold over 300 million units since its release and with an extensive iPod product family, this trend is set to continue. Technology and software used by the iPod has also been utilised in more recent Apple devices include the iPhone and iPad, which have also gone on to be two of the most desired products in their respective markets.

The company's employees have been quick to bounce back from the devastating earthquake and tsunami which struck Japan in March by putting in overtime and doing extra shifts.

	8. Research In Motion (RIM)

Even though the maker of BlackBerry has lost ground to Apple and various Android powered devices, RIM still remains one of the world's most influential smartphone manufacturers. However, consumers seem to be losing confidence in the Canada-based brand as high-profile mistakes and network outages threaten to dent RIM's image.

Despite stringent advertising regulations in place globally which have hindered the giant's marketing strategy, Marlboro's logo is still instantly recognisable and contributed to Philip Morris International's revenue of $27.208 billion in 2010.

	1. IBM

Even though Apple has been stealing technology headlines for the past year, IBM continues to be the driving force of the industry. Established in 1911, International Business Machines has been a continued market leader by providing IT services and developing hardware products across the globe. Some landmark inventions by the company include the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM), the floppy disk, the hard disk drive and magnetic stripe cards. IBM's recent success could be traced back to selling its PC business to Chinese manufacturer Lenovo in 2005 to concentrate on software and services. Dr Mark Dean, current Chief Technology Officer and one of the company's engineers who designed the first IBM personal computer even went as far as saying that PCs are 'going the way of the typewriter' and may soon be obsolete. In 2010, IBM employees topped 426,751 and revenue hit $99.870 billion.

Product failures and technology flops - Top Ten

	10. LaserDisc

	Manufacturer: Pioneer

	Year: 1983

It may well have been the first commercial optical disc storage medium, but its sheer size and cost meant the Laserdisc ultimately failed. Although it had several advantages over its main rival at the time VHS, including far superior image quality, it was poorly received by the mainstream.

	9. Windows Vista

	Manufacturer: Microsoft

	Year: 2006

Although 20 million copies of Vista were sold within the first month of its release, Microsoft's replacement for the hugely successful Windows XP operating system was a massive disappointment. Several users downgraded back to XP after Vista's hardware requirements and licensing issues caused numerous problems.

	8. Nokia N-Gage

	Manufacturer: Nokia

	Year: 2003

Although the Nokia N-Gage was quite a visionary product, it didn’t have the visual capabilities to succeed as a fully immersive handheld games console as well as lacking coherent design and features to function as a regular mobile phone. In a highly competitive mobile market, Nokia will make sure they don’t repeat this costly mistake.

	7. Apple Newton MessagePad

	Manufacturer: Apple

	Year: 1993

Arguably ahead of its time, but the Apple Newton MessagePad failed to live up to its ambitious promises. Perhaps the initial inspiration for the hugely successful iPad, the ‘Newton’ struggled to create as much hype due to a massive price tag, clunky design and hand recognition software which has been the subject of much ridicule.

	6. Ford Edsel

	Manufacturer: Ford

	Year: 1957

Now synonymous in marketing circles as how not to sell a product, several factors contributed to Ford's Edsel brand failing spectacularly. While some believe its poor reliability reputation is a common misconception, its unpopular name, questionable design features and a high price tag in a tough economic climate were more fact than fiction.

	5. Betamax

	Manufacturer: Sony

	Year: 1975

Even though Sony released Betamax a year earlier than JVC's VHS alternative, the former ultimately lost the videotape format war. Sony chose not to license Betamax technology to other manufacturers and it was also considered a more upmarket, expensive choice. When JVC partnered RCA in 1977, VHS cassettes were capable of holding four hours of content compared to Betamax's lowly one.

	4. Nintendo Virtual Boy

	Manufacturer: Nintendo

	Year: 1995

The first video game console capable of ‘3D graphics’, Nintendo’s Virtual Boy was intended to give users the illusion they were in another dimension, whereas it actually left customers feeling sick to the stomach. Not only did the graphics leave gamers feeling a little woozy, the Virtual Boy’s design and hefty price tag was truly nauseating.

	3. DeLorean DMC-12

	Manufacturer: DeLorean Motor Cars

	Year: 1981

If it wasn't for the Back to the Future film franchise, the Delorean DMC-12 would have disappeared into obscurity without a trace. However, the modified version capable of time travel gained immense notoriety for its mind-blowing technological advances, unfortunately, its road-going counterpart suffered from out-dated features, poor quality and even worse performance.

	2. McDonalds Arch Deluxe

	Manufacturer: McDonalds

	Year: 1996

McDonalds spent an estimated $300 million on the research, production, and marketing for the Arch Deluxe sandwich, which was looking to attract a more adult audience to its chain of fast food restaurants. However, its high price, unconventional advertising and high calorie content saw the Arch Deluxe fail spectacularly.

	1. New Coke

	Manufacturer: Coca-Cola

	Year: 1985

In what was one of the biggest marketing failures of all time, Coca-Cola nearly committed brand suicide in 1985 after the company revealed 'New Coke' would be replacing its original tried and tested flagship product. By the early eighties, Coca-Cola's post World War II dominance was dwindling as consumers began to favour the sweeter taste of Pepsi. Introducing another brand variety was quickly rejected as Coca-Cola management decided to take the ultimate step in product development by tampering with Coke's original and unique formula. In the same week as New Coke's official launch, production of Coca-Cola's classic formula stopped, which was greeted with a huge backlash by several loyal customers. Less than three months after New Coke's introduction, the original formula would return and by the end of the year the renamed 'Coke Classic' was substantially outselling both New Coke and Pepsi. Was this a colossal marketing failure or a resounding success which transformed declining sales and boosted interest in the Coca-Cola brand?

The Macbook Air now benefits from better responsiveness and reliability thanks to flash storage as well as featuring one of Apple’s smallest logic boards ever, freeing up more space for an even bigger battery. A high resolution display, multi-touch technology and powerful graphics processor means that the Macbook Air not only looks fantastic, it also provides outstanding speed while being incredibly portable. Although the MacBook Air’s inner component layout is a design innovation in itself, its immaculate brushed aluminium casing and sleek thin body makes this laptop a true work of art.
