For the past year, any Apple rumours have related to the highly anticipated next generation iPhone. However, now the 4S is available to buy, attention has turned to the Cupertino-based company's next release, the iPad 3. New rumours suggest the tablet has already gone into production ahead of an unveiling early next year.

According to AllThingsD, Susquehanna Financial analyst Jeff Fidacaro noted a spike in Apple's fourth-quarter tablet builds to between 12 and 14 million, from between 11 and 13 million. This rise is thought to be due in part by an early production run of iPad 3 tablets, as Apple has recently been careful to lower inventory numbers.

“Since our last month supply chain checks we are now seeing 600,000 to one million iPad 3 builds showing up on the plan for the fourth quarter of calendar 2011,” said Fidacaro. “Our previous estimate did not include any iPad 3s.”

Even though Apple decided not to implement a design overhaul with the iPhone 4S, several will be hoping the next iPad will still receive a makeover. However any changes are likely to be hardware-based, with the addition of a 9.7 inch Retina display and a quicker A6 dual-core CPU the most likely features.
