For some time now, Honda's ASMIO has been leading the way in the development of humanoid robots. Now the company believes ASIMO is even more advanced by giving the robot an upgrade with world-first technology, improved intelligence and greater physical ability.

The new ASIMO is now an 'autonomous machine' rather than an 'automatic machine' with the ability to analyse its surroundings and movement of people then make judgements based on this. The robot receives input from multiple sensors to predict situations and even determine an alternative path if an object or human is in the way. It is also able to recognise voices and faces.

Strengthened legs and a bigger range of movement has enhanced ASIMO's physical ability. New control technology also allows the robot to change landing positions mid-movement and deal with changing situations like uneven surfaces.

Object recognition technology and a new multi-fingered hand with tactile and force sensors on the palm and each finger gives ASMINO the ability to open up bottles or even squash objects. The humanoid robot can even make sign language expressions due to the range of movement available.

Even though Honda believes this is a step forward for ASIMO being used in public spaces like at home or in the office, its experimental task-performing robotic arm has also been introduced and is being developed for locations like disaster sites.
