June saw a strong set of orders for Manufacturing Technology, according to the latest survey by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), the body representing the UK machine tool and manufacturing technology sector.

MTA said both exporters and domestically focussed companies reported order growth totalling 65 percent.

The news comes on the back of a disappointing April and May, which MTA said was “perhaps due” to political and economic uncertainty gripping Europe.

“June saw a powerful return to growth,” it said in a release.

The high numbers may be due, in part, to orders placed at the sector’s biennial trade show MACH2010, which took place 7-11 June; but even some companies not at MACH also reported positive news.

Confidence and the level of inquiries also rose as business appears to be picking up from a period of doubt.

Graham Dewhurst, the MTA’s Director General said: “These numbers are good news for manufacturing. Many companies reported a high number of enquiries and orders placed at MACH; these reports, coupled with the latest Flash Survey results are further evidence to indicate that the recovery of British manufacturing, while starting from the depths of a trough, is becoming established.”

Barometer of industry?
Following on from an economically difficult two-year period, MACH2010 was seen as a barometer of industry – who would exhibit and who would visit?

Everyone knew that market conditions were very different from the 2008 show, but how this would translate into the 2010 show was hard to predict.

With aisles full of upbeat visitors and exhibitors reporting million pound deals, MACH delivered over and above what was expected, and was a real success for all involved.
