Thanks to the economic downturn, 2009 was a year to forget for most.

Not for MG Stuma, a leading UK injection moulding company.

It was the most successful year in the Bolton company’s 30 year history and it grew at its fastest rate for a decade.

What does it attribute that success to? Consolidation and a new investment strategy.

Indeed, 2009 saw the joining of MG Plastics and Stuma Plastics under one 65,000 ft roof in Bolton, supplying components to many industry sectors, including Hygiene, Medical, Defence, Aerospace, Electronics & Security, Rigid Packaging, Health & Safety, Lighting and Building Products.

“We are a full and total service provider and we wanted to consolidate all of our considerable manufacturing services onto one site,” said Managing Director Neil Redmayne. “We’ve invested heavily and have also been working closely with the Manufacturing Institute on improvements and training. We expect these major changes to significantly benefit the company and our customers.”

Redmayne said that both companies have built up excellent reputations over three decades and added that, with 100 employees and an increased forecasted turnover of 6.5 million pounds, the survival and growth strategy is clearly paying off.

One of the main growth areas within the MG Stuma business has been added value assemblies, which has grown 400 percent over the last 12 months.

“A number of our customers had a difficult 2009 and asked us to try and remove costs from their products,” Sales Director John Sturgess said. “In a number of cases we were up against Asian price benchmarks, with China at the forefront. When we showed what we could do, not just on the traditional design, tooling and injection-moulding side of things but also on supply chain management; manufacturing the final assemblies for them and supplying the finished article, some customers were gob smacked! It’s our job to work in partnership with all our customers and improving manufacturing efficiencies benefits us all”.

Technical Sales Manager Mark Preston added: “Our order book has just kept on growing over the last 12 months, the result being that in February 2010 we invested heavily and employed a new dedicated weekend shift to cope with demand. Manufacturing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week has been a massive success and our customers have been the beneficiaries.”
