When the original Mini was first released more than 50 years ago people were struck with designer, Alec Issigonis’ creative use of space.

However, the most common complaint about recent Mini models is that they are just too big.

Now BMW has addressed this with its Rocketman concept, which is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next week.

The Rocketman is a 3+1-seater with three doors and at 3.419m long, which is only a few centimetres longer than an original Mini. However, it is considerably wider than the original at 1.907m, and 1.398m tall.

BMW’s latest Mini has a carbon-fibre frame for maximum interior space. According to the manufacturer, this light-weight design will enable the car to retain performance while travelling at an average of 94mpg.

Its signature woven texture is visible at the front, around the doors and inside the cabin. The gadget-filled concept car is packed with a range of great features.

Key features of the Rocketman:
• The roof is made entirely of glass and has illuminated braces, which recreate the look of Britain’s Union Jack. Integrated fibre optics gives the interior ambient illumination.
• The concept has double-hinged side doors, which pivot open outward, complete with their sills. This is particularly useful in tight parking spaces
• A split tailgate has a drawer and integrated rear carrier. The upper gate opens up. The lower section extends 14 inches in the form of a drawer for luggage space and also can be left open as a luggage rack.
• Navigation, entertainment and communications controls are all on the steering wheel.
• Above the steering wheel is tachometer and on-board computer display and in the middle of these is a big Mini speedometer, sporting a trendy 3-D display.
• The trapezoidal LED rear lights uses technology to project the rear and brake lights and light for the turn signals onto the car body.
• Lightweight seats can be arranged for maximum comfort for two. However, there is space for three or even four passengers at a squeeze.
