160 jobs will be lost, while 100 employees out of the current workforce of 260 will be transferred to its Newbridge plant in Co Kildare.

Braun is best-known for its electric shavers and was one of the first major foreign investors in Ireland.

The Carlow plant was established in 1974.

'Phasing out'
Management said the job losses were a result of the decision to 'phase' out the Braun gas-powered cordless haircare business by June 2009, due to a decrease in consumer demand over the past few years.

Braun will now concentrate all of its Irish manufacturing in Newbridge.

"The consolidation is the best option for our business in Ireland and ensures its viability in the long-term," a spokeswoman for Procter & Gamble, the U.S. multinational which owns Braun, said.
