In response to growing consumer demand for products made with less artificial ingredients, Nestlé announced plans six years ago to produce artificially-free confectionary starting with popular treats Smarties and Milky Way. The move meant that for a time blue Smarties weren’t made available to the public until a natural colouring could be sourced.
With the news that Nestlé Crunch has become the final product in their range to be produced without artificial ingredients, Nestlé have stated today as being a landmark moment in the 100 year history of the company.
In statement to the press, David Rennie, Managing Director for Nestlé Confectionery UK, said:
“This is a significant milestone. Nestlé is proud to be the only major confectionery company in the UK to announce it is 100% free of artificial preservatives, flavours or colours across the entire portfolio.”

Changes to the recipes of all 79 of Nestlé’s products, including Quality Street, Nesquik, Kit-Kat and Aero, have meant over 80 man-made ingredients are now substituted for natural alternatives. Concentrates of fruit, vegetables and edible plants, such as carrots, lemons and radishes, are now used as food colourings rather than controversial E-numbers.
A key factor to the changes was to respond to changing market trends without jeopardising why the products were so popular in the first place.
“To achieve this, Nestlé Confectionery and our suppliers have worked very hard ensuring we don’t compromise and we maintain the same quality and taste of all our brands,” Rennie explained.
Nestlé have similar schemes in place regarding the use of palm oil in their products, with plans to have all of their palm oil sustainably sourced by 2015. Following a high-profile internet campaign in 2010, the world biggest food manufacturer came under criticism for the use of the vegetable oil from farms and plantations linked to deforestation.
