Using a special sterilisation and implosion process, Ward Recycling is now able to take sub 12mm mixed glass and turn it into non-sharp product for use in water filtration, shot blast and decorative aggregates.

The company is hoping to create another 10 jobs by the end of the year, with 25,0000 tonnes of product expected to be produced adding £2 million in sales.

Already holding ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Health & Safety), the company is now one of only a handful of similarly sized organisations to hold BSI PAS 102 – relating to processed glass for selected secondary end markets.

The company’s Sales & Marketing Manager, Paul Stonehouse commented:

“It’s been a hectic six months, but we are now finally in a position to take advantage of the investment and increased capacity. Securing BSI PAS 102 opens up a whole host of new markets for us and, basically, is a public endorsement that our product is safe to re-use and of an excellent quality.

“Getting this accreditation is a tough ask and we knew we needed some external support in achieving it. We discussed this with Teesside University who signposted us to MAS, who provided us with strategic advice and a £3,000 grant towards consultancy services.”

Following the recent accreditation, Ward’s products are currently being assessed by the DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate) and if successful, the glass plant could be running 24 hours a day, five days a week within 18 months.

The added capability shows a significant diversification from the company’s core offering, including bring-back collection services, dry recycling sorting and a number of different kerbside collection initiatives.

	Stonehouse continued:

“MAS advised us to concentrate on moisture content, particle shape and distribution, and chemical contamination, which we duly did. We then employed the services of accredited laboratories to undertake testing before we were assessed.”

Gareth Godwin, one of the three-strong management team alongside Stonehouse and Simon Barker, said:

Ward Recycling employs 140 people covering both its 12 acre site in the heart of Teesside, as well as operating numerous recycling schemes around, the UK on behalf of its clients, Palm Recycling being one of the biggest.

	MAS Advisor, Jim Barr said:

“When you are investing sizable sums of money into a project, there can sometimes be a temptation to rush in and make quick decisions so you start to see the funding pay off. This is where we come in and act as a sounding board for a manufacturer and, working with their management team, draw up a strategy or solution to help it achieve its aims.

“In Ward Recycling’s case it was about the best route to market and this involved securing BSI PAS 102. We understood the basics of what was required, but also understood that this required specialists. We found £3,000 of funding towards supporting experts from Teesside University.

“I was also able to put the business in contact with a local concrete manufacturer who took the waste material from their process and used it in their own products, therefore saving on time and landfill costs.”

For carmakers, OEMs and Tier suppliers, information and communication flow are essential factors to streamlining the complexities of internal automotive supply chains.

To harness its expansive automotive network so it functions locally at an optimal level, DHL Global Forwarding, the Bonn, Germany-based freight transport and logistics arm of Deutsche Post DHL, maintains a network of nine Automotive Competency Centers (ACCs) around the world.

ACCs are centralised customer service teams that operate in key global automotive markets. The reaction to the ACC concept has been extremely positive and has resulted in DHL Global Forwarding doubling the number of ACCs each year since the first one became operational in 2010.

DHL Global Forwarding now has a global ACC footprint with locations in India, China, Germany, Hungary, Spain, South Africa, Mexico, USA and Brazil - the latest ACC launched in Johannesburg, South Africa in late 2012.

	Automotive Competency Centers

The competency center concept originated from customer feedback through DHL Global Forwarding’s Voice of the Customer program. It was clear that a strong customer demand existed for a centralised, single point of contact within the company.

With a network consisting of stations in over 150 different countries, the challenge for DHL Global Forwarding was to supply consistency to its customers in primary automotive markets and their vendors, while providing streamlined customer support throughout global supply chains.

To provide an operational solution, DHL Global Forwarding needed to bring together its internal automotive expertise with a knowledge base that was spread throughout the organisation. Wildly popular among customers, ACCs are unique to the logistics industry and supply chain management of automotive parts throughout the world.

For our automotive customers, there is a primary need to be able to pick up a phone, speed dial, and get the right answers quickly from its service provider. Logistical challenges for the automotive customer base include a wide range of issues such as quotation requests, coordination of expedited shipments, exception management, shipment escalation, and reporting requirements.

All these elements are critical to DHL Global Forwarding’s customers, and the ACC network provides a single point of contact to address each of them. In addition, all modes of transportation are covered by the ACCs, whether it involves air freight, ocean freight, customs brokerage, or purchase order management.

The ACC’s processes significantly simplify the customers’ internal supply chains, allowing them to better coordinate the logistics activities throughout their organisations. ACCs are a layer of customer service that is a compliance-monitoring device that sits on top of the extensive DHL Global Forwarding network. The ACCs provide an “umbrella” overview, which adds tremendous value to the company’s customers.

	Centralised operating platform

DHL Global Forwarding has various types of automotive customers, and the company found that each has different needs with varying levels of scope and complexity. That is why an identical, centralised operating platform containing specific automotive logistics experts was needed at every link in the supply chain.

Typically, the movement of freight in the forwarding industry is tracked at the shipment level or purchase order level. Through the ACCs however, DHL Global Forwarding has the ability to link to customers’ systems, allowing it to observe Advanced Shipment Notices (ASNs) and follow shipments at a part number level, hence providing a more sophisticated level of visibility compared to the traditional model.

From the moment a shipment is generated in a supplier’s computer system to final delivery to an OEM or an assembly line, DHL Global Forwarding is able to manage the logistics from start to finish and manage inventory levels by individual part numbers throughout the process.

Because the automotive industry is dominated by an Inbound-to-Manufacturing supply chain model, the locations targeted for ACCs depend largely on the level of a particular country’s manufacturing activity, capabilities and processes.

	Future locations

Considering that the automotive industry has experienced a significant shift in manufacturing away from traditional markets (Western Europe, North America) in the past few decades, DHL Global Forwarding continues to look for opportunities to penetrate new markets to establish its ACCs.

Russia and Turkey, for example, are becoming more important markets from a manufacturing standpoint. Another dynamic market where the company is well positioned is Mexico, where Japanese OEMs in particular plan to invest heavily in the next few years. This will result in significant growth requirements for the Tier suppliers in Mexico as well.

As demand grows, DHL’s ACC model is flexible and the company intends to invest in future ACC locations where needed. In the Americas, although the company has invested heavily in the US, Mexico and Brazil markets, countries such as Argentina remain a potential target for ACC expansion depending on customer demands.

DHL Global Forwarding will continue to invest in the current ACC model with all the required personnel and system resources to effectively service its growing automotive customer base, and to continue to grow its global market share in the automotive sector.

Offering a 4.6” HD Reality display, 13mp fast capture camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHz processors and 4G LTE, the Xperia ZR certainly packs a punch, but the added capability of water-resistance could make the difference in an already crowded marketplace.

Not the first water-resistant smartphone, Sony’s latest sleek, yet durable design looks the part, allowing the handset to be submerged in 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. A dedicated camera key allows the user to shoot even from a locked screen, with High Dynamic Range, Superior Auto mode and Scene Recognition ensuring missed moments become a thing of the past.

With the underwater capabilities ensuring the phone also stays dust-free, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications, Calum MacDougall commented:

“The Xperia ZR pushed the boundaries on where and how consumers can use the full potential of their smartphone. By combining Sony’s leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment.

“Bringing together the best of Sony’s leading technology, media applications and easy one-touch connectivity with the largest ever rage of NFC-enabled accessories, the Xperia ZR delivers the unique smartphone experience that people can expect from Sony.”

In an endeavour supported by the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), UK-based NiteSite’s new handheld unit provides a guaranteed range of 400 yards.

Following successful exhibitions in both Germany and Las Vegas, production for the Spotter is now ramping up as the company prepares itself for the official marketplace launch next month.

European Sales Manager, Jake Horwell commented:

“The business has been based on innovation from day one and we are continually talking to the market about what solutions they are looking for. Our original products – the NS50 and NS200 – have been a huge success and helped provide us with a platform to build on.

“The impending launch of the Spotter marks the next stage in affordable night vision technology...and we expect it to be very popular with hunters and the security market. Our products are different because they have successfully replaced expensive technology associated with the sector, with a much simpler process that’s based on the principles of a security camera system.”

Bringing any product to market is always challenging for a SME and NiteSite’s management team quickly sought the support of MAS to turn the ambitions plans into a reality.

	Horwell added:

“We couldn’t have got the Spotter developed so quickly without the support of MAS and LDT Design, who both acted as great sounding boards and a constant source of fresh ideas. Thanks to the external assistance we had effective prototypes ready for the two recent exhibitions and now have tooling in place that we can put into immediate production when the orders start rolling in.”

Following a visit to the business to better understand the project and best route forward, MAS provided funding for three consecutive projects covering concept design, market research and 2D foam sketch models which lead to a 3D CAD model of the surface suitable for soft tooling.

	MAS Advisor, John Dodgson said:

“Every now and again you come across a company that truly understands its markets and, more importantly shares a business-wide desire to innovate. NiteSite is one such example and better still, they haven’t been afraid to seek external help when they need it.

“By tapping into MAS, we have provided strategic and financial support – the latter focused on calling in the dedicated expertise of LDT Design, who has made a phenomenal difference.”

Owner of LDT Design, Lee Taylor concluded:

“It gives you great satisfaction when a product comes alive and reaches the marketplace. We work with MAS on a regular basis to help get projects off the ground, unleashing the potential of the region’s manufacturing companies in the process.”

Over 3.5 million cubic metres of concrete were poured into the 249 metre high and 720 metre long structure on the Coruh River in north-eastern Turkey; in a build that took 10 years at a cost of €1.5 billion.

Beating at the heart of the Deriner Dam is an underground power plant, with four giant turbines generating 2,100 gigawatt hours every year – the equivalent consumption of a major city.

Hilmi Kaplan, who is responsible for the electromechanical realisation at ERG Trade and Industry, the company behind large parts of the dam’s construction said:

“To achieve this power output, we will impound almost two billion litres of water. Safety is naturally a top priority in any project of this size. The main risk for a dam is that the reservoir overflows, which would result in uncontrolled flooding. This could potentially be caused earthquakes or extreme tides in the nearby Black Sea.”

Two substantial tilting gates, featuring Rexroth drives, provide the necessary flood discharge capability; diverting surplus water into the basin at the foot of the dam via two artificial diversion tunnels.

“A total of 2,250 cubic metres per second can run off via these ducts. That’s enough for a lot of situations. But if a ‘flood of the century’ should occur, we need many times this capacity.”

Adding the extra capacity needed are eight central outlet gates integrated into the main dam structure. The gates can handle an additional volume of 7,000 cubic metres a second and are arranged symmetrically to reduce the impact of the outflowing water.

The opening drives for the massive central outlet gates represented a major challenge for the design of the hydraulic drives. Each gate weighs 24 tonnes; yet despite this, each drive must work in parallel to ensure the gates always open and close in sync.

Bosch Rexroth’s innovative solution was to mount the custom-made, lightweight steel drive cylinders of the central outlet gates vertically in the drives. Additionally, the essential delay-free synchronisation needed to ensure each gate is opens and closes efficiently needed to cover a distance of over a kilometre.

For this reason, a fibre optic network was installed to transport each control command. Like the central outlet gates, the network has been fully tested to ensure that the Deriner Dam can safely go into service in 2013.

UK-based Seneye has developed a revolutionary water monitoring device that is set to protect millions of fish both commercially and privately.

The innovative company successfully created a product that uses an optical sensor to detect changes in water parameters, including temperature, filter crashes (free ammonia levels), sudden Ph changes, water and light levels.

However, the management team was worried about opening the product to the international market without an effective IP strategy on place; a worry alleviated by the support of the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS).

Seneye’s Managing Director, Matt Stevenson commented:

“We knew we had an innovation that would change the way people kept their fish, but as a relatively small company, we didn’t want to rush out into the open and risk the prospect of some bigger rivals copying us and getting to market first.

“This posed a problem so we enlisted the support of MAS Advisor Chris Perry, who visited and quickly understood the product, the opportunity and the risks.”

Boosted by the extra support, Seneye’s product is now stocked in more than 20 countries, including Australia where it has garnered a major following.

Fish enthusiasts can choose from products for the home, pond or reef, with an app, mobile access and SMS alerts helping you monitor conditions while on the move.

	Stevenson continued:

“Working with Patent Attorneys Marks & Clerk LLP, we identified the unique novelty points of our device and came up with an IPR strategy that would withstand potential objections.

“Then it was a case of preparing and filling an International (PCT) application and formally registering a patent. It sounds simple, but we couldn’t have done it without the MAS support.”

The support also included Six Sigma training and new product development. MAS Advisor, Chris Perry added:

“The team at Seneye has developed a fantastic product but were struggling to launch it internationally. We were able to offer funding and support for IP protection that took a lot of the stress out of the sales push. The support has not switched to helping it with development, testing and commercialisation of a new innovative sector technology.”

The focus for 2103 includes breaking into the lucrative German and US markets and to make the most of mounting interest from commercial aquaria and agriculture, alongside algae-based biofuel producers.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have designed and developed an inexpensive tactile sensor for robotic hands sensitive enough to turn an industrial machine into a deft manipulator.

Formed in the Harvard Biorobotics Laboratory at SEAS, the TakkTile sensor is intended to put a technology typically only available to high-end investors within the reach of commercial investors, academic and robotics enthusiasts.

Co-creator and graduate student at SEAS, Leif Jentoft said:

“Despite decades of research, tactile sensing hasn’t moved into general use because it’s been expensive and fragile. It normally costs about $16,000, give or take, to put tactile sensing on a research robot hand. That’s really limited where people can use it.

“The traditional technology also uses very specialised construction techniques, which can slow down you work. Now TakkTile changes that because it’s based on much simpler and cheaper fabrication methods.”

By making use of a standard device– a small barometer which senses air pressure – used in mobile phones and GPS units and combining it with a layer of vacuum-sealed rubber, the sensor becomes protected from as much as 25 pounds of direct pressure. Capable of surviving a direct hit from a hammer or baseball bat, TakkTile is still sensitive enough to detect the slightest of touch.

The ensuing effect means, when added to a mechanical hand, you have a robot that understands what its touching, can pick up a balloon without popping and when given a key, can unlock a door.

Robotics aside, the creators propose that the TakkTile sensor has the potential to be used in a range of electronic devices such as being utilised by a toy manufacturer to produce a stuffed puppy which responds to petting, or a medical device manufacturer could produce a laparoscopic gripper gentle enough to tease apart delicate tissue during surgery.

Co-creator and postdoctoral fellow, Yaroslav Tenzer added:

“Not everyone has the bandwidth to do the research themselves, but there are plenty of people who could find new applications and ways of using this.”

Developed by the Engineered Polymer Systems (EPS) Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation; the product, dubbed Parker Medical Grade ALC Polyurethane, is an aliphatic polycarbonate-based thermoplastic polyurethane designed for medical and life science applications.

ALC Polyurethanes are non-yellowing, colour-matchable and available in clear or radiopaque grades; manufactured in an ISO-certified clean room environment; softens in the body; biocompatible and biostable; enhanced reliability over currently available polyurethanes and have excellent mechanical properties.

Potential medical applications include vascular access devices, cardiovascular treatment devices, disposable surgical supplies, tracheotomy devices, urological devices, dialysis devices and feeding tubes.

Parker EPS Senior Chemist, Arlo McGinn PhD commented:

“Parker’s new ALC polyurethanes offer a proven advantage over competitive products. Many medical grade urethanes, including ALC polyurethane are now made with aliphatic polyurethane instead of the old standard, aromatic polyurethane, because of yellowing and carcinogenic concerns.

“The aliphatic polyurethanes have lower mechanical properties than aromatic but degrade to potentially safer end products, do not discolour upon exposure to light, and also show enhanced resistance to hydrolytic decomposition.

“However, along with the decreased mechanical properties, aliphatic polyurethanes are more prone to a physical degradation process – termed environmental stress cracking – than their aromatic counterparts.

	McGinn continued:

“Parker has successfully addressed this issue through its proprietary formulation and advanced manufacturing process. We analysed the performance of several aliphatic polycarbonate polyurethanes, including our ALC polyurethanes and two competitors.

“Upon exposure to alkaline conditions, differences in tube performance within the ALC class were compelling; the competitive ALC urethane tubes quickly degraded and failed due to the effects of environmental stress cracking.

“During the same period however, Parker’s ALC formulation showed no significant change after initial softening over the course of the testing and demonstrated enhanced resistance to environmental stress cracking.”

Polyurethane materials are specified for medical device components due to their ability to meet the stringent performance, biocompatibility and sterilisation requirements of the applications in which the devices are used.

A design review of Global Positioning System (GPS) III planned for use by the US Air Force has been successfully completed by global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin.

The Delta Preliminary Design Review (dPDR) will ensure the next GPS III programme will affordably replace ageing GPS satellites while improving capability to meet the evolving demands of military, commercial and civilian users.

GPS III satellites will deliver three times better accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming signal power while enhancing the spacecraft’s design life and adding a new civil signal designed to be interoperable with international global navigation satellite systems.

The Air Force plans to purchase up to 32 GPS III satellites. Lockheed Martin is currently under contract for production of the first four GPS III satellites, and has received advanced procurement funding for long-lead components for the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth satellites.

The successful dPDR addresses design modifications, agreed upon by the Air Force and the Lockheed Martin-lead industry team, which will provide new capabilities for GPS III Space Vehicle 9 (SV09) and beyond, including the addition of a search and rescue satellite payload and a Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA).

An innovative new waveform generator permits the addition of new navigation signals after launch to upgrade the constellation without the need to launch new satellites.

“We have worked very closely with the Air Force and GPS community to make GPS III the most affordable and lowest risk solution for bringing new capabilities to the GPS constellation.

John Frye, Lockheed Martin’s GPS III Capability and Affordability Insertion Manager, said: “The design modifications from this dPDR address ways to further reduce Air Force launch costs by $50 million per satellite through dual launch of two GPS III space vehicles on a single booster."

“This successful dPDR milestone sets the stage to proceed with SV09 design maturation.”

From the beginning of the program, the Lockheed Martin team has remained focused on affordability for GPS III; all while working to ensure the enhanced satellite system can evolve to continue to meet the world's global navigation and timing needs for the next 30 years.

To help reduce risks and cut costs, the GPS III team developed a GPS Non-Flight Satellite Tested (GNST), which serves as the program's ground pathfinder and vehicle demonstrator for the first complete satellite.

The entire GPS III development and production sequence utilizes the GNST to provide space vehicle design level validation; early verification of ground support and test equipment; and early confirmation and rehearsal of transportation operations.

Lockheed Martin is on track to deliver the first GPS III satellite, with its enhanced capabilities over current orbiting systems, for launch availability in 2014.
